    Smiling Friends (2022)

This show is so funny it's amazing. The character designs, the dialogues, the story itself about guys who want to put a smile on people face, because it's their job as a healthline. The people they encounter are always new and the experiences they make are different, in a funny way. The dialogues feel like it's some sort of a podcast for me because yeah i've heard people talk like that and i like how sometimes the conversations overlap to give it more realism. The use of mixed media fits so perfectly to this story because you can see how many crazy other worlds there are and that so many things are possible.

Right before i went to Annecy Animation festival i watched a few episodes. And when i got to the festival i got to see the creators Michael Cusack and Zack Hadel do an interview with "important" people from Adult Swim and Genndy Tartakovsky who worked on shows like fucking Samurai Jack and Primal.
But I went there with no background search at all about how they created it and all. When they started talking i was like yo wtf why do they exactly talk and sound like Charlie and Pim? Is this a huge bit that they want to hold for the entire interview or? yeah no they used their actual voices in it which makes it so much better and real. That's why it feels like a podcast. And at the same time, when i got to be able to see them, my eyes created this charlie and pim filter like i was actually seeing the animationcharacters which is more funny.
Anyways, most characters in the show look weird with hyperexaggerated features. Also they use mundane and awkward situations, juxta pose for some cartoony elements being used to extract humor. The show is incredibly amazing and i hope to see more of it.

    Alice (1988)

This movie hits me at a certain spot. It's a specific spot right between the comfortable and the uncomfortable but in a very good way still. I really love the transitions of how alice goes to different places. Besides that i really like the characters they use, mostly just toys and real skeletons. If i would watch it as a kid i would be terrified but that's the fun of it. This movie is the most feverdream-ish of all the Alice in Wonderland remakes i've seen right now because it uses stopmotion and pixelation in one to show a piece of reality in it.

    Mindgame (2004)

from Masaaki Yuasa. He has made more movies that i really love but this one is so expressive in a way. The linework is wonky, the perspectives are dramatic sometimes, different color contrasts, mixed media.

This is one of the inspirations i will use for my endmovie/animation for school i'll be working on with another classmate. We're planning to use it for the design/layout because we want it to be very expressive because it fits the story.

For the design, we want to use a strong dynamic with light and color. You can see that color has a lot of impact on the environment in this film, for example if there is danger or a serious moment then it is red or blue and dark. But if there is a lot of joy then everything is a bit more bright. Here they used Monochromatic Color Design to enhance the mood of the environment. It creates consistency in color, which you can clearly see in certain scenes. In terms of shading, it is only used in the background, but occasionally it is used for the characters when the situation becomes serious. The characters do stand out a bit more when only the background contains details. In addition, a lot of mixed media is used, but only in the characters to show certain emotions which makes it stand out alot. Also how it depicts God is so perfect. Because God is shown as something that can be everything. So i think that's a good choice to use mixed media for that because you can see the different material where you get an interpretation of different personalities, beings and things.

My first blog entry! I wanted to talk about what things inspire me because I need to keep track of them so I don't forget. When I work on a project for school, I tend to make it only for school and not for myself as well. So when I work on my own project outside of school, I get so many ideas from different sources that I will always refer back to.

My first inspiration i want to talk about is

    Fooly Cooly/FLCL (2000)

The animation is soo cool and the style looks sometimes so simple eventhough it totally isn't. They use alot of limited animation, that also includes reuse of existing frames to make loops, for dramatic atmospheres.

In addition, they draw large steps between movements making the movements more dramatic (With the use of many flashframes, if I must call it that, with random forms of vfx stuff). But it's a mix between smoother and limited animation. So i'd love to fuck around with this just how they did it in these series.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Paprika (2007)

from Satoshi Kon. I really like how everything is so detailed because it really fits the story aswell. Everything revolves around dreams so it can also be used to portray some realism in it to let the audience feel like it's real, to live through those dreams with the characters.

I'm personally very interested in dreams because so many random shit happens that is just a mystery why they happen. And each event is so unpredictable which makes it even better for surprises. Also the fact that sometimes you start to question if you're in a dream or not is kinda scary, but also interesting in a way.
I had experienced a few times that when I woke up from a dream that I thought I was still in it, with a very specific feeling in my chest that felt quite comfortable. Recently I sometimes long for my dreams to stay in them because reality just sucks more sometimes. But then I just have to hope I don't get a nightmare or something. Because last time I woke up from a nightmare about being slowly murdered by people in a completely white room. I woke up in a completely white room then too, so that was kind of fucking scary. But now most of the dreams I have are just chill and pretty sick. I only wish i could make those dreams real though.

Anyways, back to Paprika, I would love to work with that kind of unpredictability as well with how you can manipulate the environment and events, with transitions, in a dream-like setting. Whenever there is something new to see again it gives more variety and the feeling like you are getting multiple gifts from Santa.

    Games

    review

    Jan 21 2025
Yeah, shit, i think im not able to play games for a while because i have ALOT to do for school which sucks. I'm really bad with time managing and try to experiment with different techniques. What helped a little is making A2 format month calender (because i can't find it at any store). And i fr mean a 3/4th filled A2 calender without having a picture that fills half of the entire format, to write alot of shit down and put it to my wall right infront of me. I think i'm definitely going to print more of these calenders like this for ppl who struggle with remembering to do things or just so that it feels like the calender is screaming at you to do shit.

Anyways, i will find time soon to play any.

      Games list:
    • Hylics
    • Piero's Pilgrimage
    • Phantasmagoria
    • NARRENSCHIFF
    • LSD: Dream Emulator
    • Machinarium
    • moon: Remix RPG Adventure
    • South Scrimshaw (visual novel)
    • Project Zomboid
    • Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls Of Tong Nou
I wanna try them all. I will definitely add more games to this list as I get more recommendations or come across any.
The only disadvantage I have is that I have a mac so I can't play some games from that list right now. But i'm saving up for a PC anyways so i'll know freedom when i'll get there >:).

    Jan 9 2025

I'm planning to play more games and i'm looking forward to play a few that i got on my list that i will talk about later.
I don't normally play games that much, but since last year I've been more into them.

Games i've been playing were Yumme Nikki and OFF. Only the wack part of Yume Nikki that i downloaded is that you're not able to save any progress which sucks. So i have to let the RPG player tab open forever till i pass the game. But it do be something i be willing to take during summer tbh, because the game is sooo good and kind of comforting because of the music.
I also haven't finished OFF because something went wrong with the game itself but i got to look at that one. Both games are damn awesome. I really like the way how everything looks so cute eventhough its kinda scary because everything is pretty much unpredictable.

    Music

    low quality audio's (demo's/wip)

    Apr 14 2025

I made the last one all the way back in september but i was doubting to post it because idk it was a improv sesh and i kinda sing/murmur in it.

My song writings go with phases man. Sometimes i'm really into shoegaze/emo stuff and then the other day early 00s indierock or something. I'll add more older demo's in here from other genres i guess because this entire Music tab feels empty.

These 2 songs need more drumvariations.

    Here's another song idea.

My inspirations on this songmaking are just any shoegaze song and slowrock/emo songs from the 80s/90s/00s like Train Breaks Down, Slint, Swirlies, Breakwater, Oeil, My Bloody Valentine, Pia Fraus and Soundpool. But right now i'm more in the mood to make screamsongs. Unfortunately i don't know where the fuck i would be able to scream to record it. Maybe at school but the sound is still pretty easy to escape so other ppl from the studio's next door will probably get annoyed. Home is NOT an option obvs. Agh, i just don't wanna pay for studio sessionsss. Maybe i should just do it at school together with someone cuz then we would not give a fuck at that point.

I should finish my songs asap. I'll take care of the quality later, i just need to focus on making demo's now. There are sooo many parts of songs saved on my dictaphone aswell as very old ones 6 years ago. Omygod, 6 years, no, that's fucked up, time goes too fast rn. It feels it goes faster the more years we pass.

Here's one part of a demo i made for now. I have yet to figure out what else to put in it.

I got to borrow my brothers Ibanez and amp because he barely uses it. I thought i had to buy my own pedals but then i realized my dad has one. It's a crazy big pedal where u can fuck around with so many sounds. I forgot which model it is but it's all in one with distortion, delay, chorus, reverb, drive, gain, fuzz etc. You can save your own specific sounds in different channels so that u can go back to them whenever you want. Only Bitcrusher is missing but whatever. I got everything i already need.

    Childhood Phobia

    Animation

    Mar 11 2025

Whenever i see metal tube slides i keep thinking of my childhood phobia where i thought that metal tube slides secretly had all sorts of knifes and blades + burners in there to chop us into pieces and put us back together for fun. And i was like 'i can't tell my thoughts to anyone because else they're going to think i'm weird.' These slides were really fun for everyone and my 6 year old self was standing there thinking about the most gore and vile ways to get chopped into pieces through a fun slide.
There was this park we went to with school where i got the first metal slide experience. The slide was very long and was painted like a snake. I couldn't see the end because it was spiraling downwards. When i got all the way to the top before sliding down i got this gut wrecking feeling and was wondering what would be inside this slide with fear. So i thought about gore stuff and was super scared to die. So I let everyone go ahead of me until my teacher called us all together to go back to school. I was looking at them like 'how do they not feel any pain? Or do they feel it first and then not? Because everyone screams and then stops when they get to the end.' I never went down any metal slide for about a year until i went to another playground at a pancake restaurant where i was able to look inside the slide where i could see the other end. There was nothing ofc. Then I ate the best pancakes there were.

I want to make an animation about this because it's fun to revisit your silly childhood moments.

    Experimental Animation Project

    animation

    Feb 1 2025
I have changed my mind with my project. I'm planning to use foundfootage photo's using it where the background changes every shot. I will use it in a car scene where the characters are just driving the entire time. I'm planning to find out if the audience sees the background change or not because it's fun to see a little illusion. The characters will be completely handdrawn so that the audience will be more focused on them than everything around them.
Besides design i want the situation to have a vibe of smiling friends where they have a silly conversation about something random. The conversation will be real like it doesn't feel staged at all.

When it comes to shadows i feel like it could be just a little extra thing to set the mood better maybe. I could fuck around with time that the sun might be setting slowly till it becomes night and you don't even catch that switch.

    Jan 21 2025
This is the animationproject i have to redo for school T^T, but i'm still gonna write it in here.

The idea that popped up is to keep experimenting with lighting and color. I want to see how the light can tell an emotion or situation in a surreal environment to be able to only let the lighting and color do the work. An understandable and obvious environment can most of the time pretty much tell how a person may feel or how the story will go because ofcourse the person is affected by it. In addition to that i'd like to experiment with mixed media aswell to form some realism in a cryptic environment. It's as if everything is normal and supposed to me there, instead of something that feels suddenly different maybe.
Therefore i'd like to take inspiration from a dream i had. After i woke up to it i got such a good feeling eventhough so much mysterious stuff happened in it that i didn't even took a bother to question them. It felt like it was just part of reality. My main goal for this is to try to copy that feeling through light and mixed media.

    'Trash Hunt'

    animation

    Jan 9 2025

The story is about 3 people are bored and want to do something but are lazy to get up. Until someone looks out the window and finds a playstation somewhere among the trash. They go on a trash hunt because they found something cool so they want to find more. At the end they run into people who accidentally lost or accidentally threw away their stuff that the main characters happen to have. So they return those. At the end they get to have the playstation. It ends when they find out that the playstation is cursed. Now they're definitely not bored anymore for much longer.

I'm not planning to give some sort of motto but it's just a visualization of a random adventure people end up with, some sort of start of a learning point i guess. What reminds me of what happens in FLCL, where shit just happens while everyone is just living their daily lives normally. What i really want to experiment with is the design and worldbuilding to use mixed media.
